St. Joseph School's April 11, 2008 Friday Flyer! Hello %%First Name%%! You are subscribed as %%emailaddress%%

Messenger The coming visit of Our Holy Father is and will prove to be most significant on many levels. Internet sites, television, and written media are producing countless programs and reviews on him, his words, the Church in general, and its representation in our Country. (not all positive, of course!) One major primary source is the Catholic cable network EWTN, which will carry the visit live from April 15-20. Let us anticipate his visit by joining in prayer not only for Our Holy Father's personal safety but also that the message He offers will be heard.
One More DayAfter all the waiting and preparation, First Communion Day is finally here. We look forward to this great blessing for our children and their families. All are welcome to join us in extending our congratulations during the Monday morning reception right after Mass. Doughnuts, drinks, and greetings will be offered.
Tragedy and HopeAlthough tragedy struck our community with the automobile accident last week-end, we cannot help but acknowledge and thank God for the great blessing that the Richardson's daughter, Maggie, survived, is healing, and plans to return to school soon. We continue to remember Shawn, who was buried today, and Jeremy, hospitalized in serious condition, and their families in our prayers.
The following is a note from the Richardson family:
Dear Parents of St. Joseph School, Just a note of appreciation for all the kind words, actions, and prayers, during this difficult time for our family. Maggie is recovering well physically, but it will be a long emotional recovery. Please continue to pray for us and for a quick recovery for Maggie's friend, Jeremy. Finally, pray for Shawn, who will be missed by so many. Your thoughtfulness will be remembered always.
Sincerely,
The Richardson Family
Family NightFt. Zumwalt's recent adjustment of after school activities made a wonderful contribution to the "family". In its description of frenzied families trying to meet schedules of so many activities every day, they identified the need for families to have at least one day when nothing was scheduled. Therefore, Monday is set aside as "activity free". Although the pace of life is often recognized as frenzied, little or nothing is done to alleviate the problem. Hats off to this attempt by the Ft. Zumwalt School District!
Safe-Touch ProgramOur Annual Archdiocesan Safe-Touch program will be presented to each class on Tuesday by Mary Romine. Attached is a form to "opt out" of the class if you do not wish your child to participate in it. Presentations provide age-appropriate concepts of purity. Please do not hesitate to request a curriculum guide for the grade level of your child if you would like additional information.

Recycling Update Results of the 6 month (Oct.-March) paper recycling contest showed that we collected 1.6 tons over last year, but fell short of the $500 goal by 4.0 tons. Thanks to Patti Luetkenhaus for her efforts with this project and all those who so faithfully collected paper for the contest.
The Fox This was the week when you could drive up to the Fox Theater and see the words "Catholic Schools Night" shining out from the marquee. "St. Louis Catholic Schools Fine arts Night at the Fox" was a unique and tremendous success. After two years of planning approximately 70 schools participated in a variety of musical presentations including symphonic, jazz, and concert bands, Irish Dance, recorder ensemble, and singing by several kinds of choirs. The talent, discipline, and renditions of the many students who performed were most inspiring and entertaining. You can still see a portion of the art exhibit on "kmov.com" and the Archdiocesan web site (archstl.org). Archbishop Burke was presented with a framed Dedication in honor of his support of the Mission of Catholic Education ... To Teach as Jesus Did! Also, a grateful and fond farewell was given to Sister Pat Giljum, CSJ who has been reassigned by her Religious Order after 33 years of service in her position as Archdiocesan Director of the Fine Arts Program.
Reminders: Send in Health Forms, Fees for 2008-2009, Re-registration forms
Attachments: Safe-Touch Forms, School Tools, Catholic Radio Schedule

Time
'Time change' weekend. As we journey through Lent these two words could take on profound meaning for us in our spiritual life. It appears that 'time' is such an issue in our fast paced lives, so often out of our control. And the 'change' that we're called to each day doesn't seem possible. This is another reason for the great opportunity Lent provides. Let's resolve to give God a chance with our 'time' and we will see 'change'.

The total donation for our Jumpathon this year came to $589 and the Change for Change, collected over the past 4 months was $679.50. This enabled us to send $951.38 to the Key Player Initiative for the Homeless and keep $317.13 for our local needy at Saint Joseph Parish.
Our Mission Carnival brought in $627.00. Part of this money was sent to the Columban Missions, who provided us with educational materials for Catholic Schools Week; and the Catholic Mission Program of 'Pan Y Amor' for needy children.
Thank you all for your generosity.

St. Joseph Altar
The feast of Saint Joseph has been moved to Saturday, March 15th this year because the 19th falls on Wednesday of Holy Week. Although we originally had planned to celebrate this Feast on Friday, the 14th, it is necessary to move our celebration back one more day to Thursday, March 13th, because our 7th and 8th Grades will be away for their Retreat. (The Retreat was re-scheduled to this day because of 'snow days').
Our celebration will include a 'Saint Joseph Altar'. The Altar consisting of 'pictures', 'statues', and/ or other items to remind us of our holy Patron, Saint Joseph, is set up in the cafeteria. In addition, loaves of bread are placed on the altar and given to each family.
Families are invited to send in an image or other memorabilia of Saint Joseph for the altar. Please be sure your name is attached somehow so it can be returned to you. The altar will be taken down on Monday and everything returned. Attached is a newspaper photo of an altar for your enjoyment.

Listen
The preparation meetings for our Confirmation class included a riveting presentation last night by Father Ray Hagar from Sacred Heart Parish in Ellsberry on the subject of "prayer". One story about his experience as a 10 year old child brought the value of prayer home in a new way. One day, the sound of an approaching train, and abandoned by his friends, Father found himself frightened and alone with his foot stuck in a railroad track. After turning to God in prayer he heard a thought telling him to untie his shoe. As soon as he did and pulled his foot out of the track, the train whizzed by. Prayer is important in all circumstances…believe it…do it…and 'listen'.

Our 'Mission Carnival' was another huge success. Your support enabled us to have a great time and raise funds for our two mission projects. The $627.34 will be divided between the Society for the Propagation of Faith and the Columban Missions. We have received free learning materials about peoples and cultures of the world for each grade level from the Columban Missions for use during our Catholic School Week programs. Thanks to all who supported our Book Fair. The weather set us back some, yet we finished with a total of $1,242.24 in sales giving us $460.00 in profit to spend for additional library books.

Stewardship
Did you realize that information about your stewardship donations for tuition/school support can be forwarded by the parish office to your place of work for a "matching grant" on a regular basis (quarterly, annually)? As this is a way of gaining extra income for the school, you are encouraged to ask your employers whether they offer this benefit and let Trish Seaman know. Similar claims cannot be made with a tuition program. Thanks to the Gorman family for their matching grant from the Pfizer Foundation for $2535.

Lent
As lent approaches with Ash Wednesday this week we are bombarded with many options for demonstrating our faith and love of God during this brief 40 day period. Certainly family and individual prayer might be at the top of the list.
If you have never considered visiting the church on Tuesdays during "Adoration", this is a good time to start. St. Joseph Parish offers "Adoration", where Jesus Christ is exposed on the altar after morning Mass until 7:00 pm., each Tuesday. We are given here a most remarkable privilege. You can stop in for ten minutes or an hour. ("Could you not watch one hour with Me?") Visiting with Jesus even for a brief time like this is sometimes likened to 'radiation therapy'. You look at God and He looks at you. Something will definitely be affected…

Catholic Schools Week Thanks
Thanks to all who helped to make our celebration this week so special. The Monday doughnut social with the Parish, the Wall of Fame, and Career/ Vocation Day have been so fun. Special thanks to Tracy Boehmer for her tireless efforts in providing the doughnut social and organizing Career/ Vocation speakers. Also to Fr. Huber, Deacon Pat, Mike Heppermann, Jeff Wilson, Eric Boehmer, Lynette Mueller, Tim Michaelree, and Tracy Boehmer for their presentations to each class. As this goes to press we may have to postpone our Open House World Tour from Friday to Monday morning because of weather. We realize it may be 'inconvenient' and 'disappointing', but due to the packed week ahead of us, there are no other options. The Chili Supper will not be rescheduled. Stay tuned.

Joey!
Unfortunately, Father Huber's dog, our campus buddy, Joey, met with a fatal accident recently….while chasing something, he was hit by a car. It seems everyone has a "Joey story"… here is Father Huber's. "To put it simply, Joey was my buddy. In the year and a half that Joey was with me he was my companion during life's daily routine. Joey was with me taking walks and praying, taking out the trash, eating, visiting families, and he was with me at Church early in the morning praying. When I got up each morning Joey was the first thing that greeted me and the last face I saw before I went to sleep. Since Joey's death, there is something missing in everything that I do in my daily life. Joey was such a good dog. He had such a warm and friendly personality. Every one that Joey met was his buddy for life. He loved being around parishioners, especially the children. When Joey knew that we were going to visit the children, he couldn't wait to greet them. Many times whenever I was invited to someone's home for dinner, they would ask me to bring Joey. He always loved visiting with people. The home that Joey loved to visit the most was where Joey spent his last days. Joey died a very happy dog with all his friends. I miss Joey so much. I wish there was a way to undo what happened to him. There is a lot about Joey's death that I do not understand. I do know that, in a "dogging" sort of way, Joey loved you all. I could tell how much he appreciated all of the loving attention that you gave him. Because of you Joey lived and died a very happy dog. Like you I will miss him very much." .

Catholic Schools Week
The theme for Catholic Schools Week this year is "Lighting the Way". Celebrating this theme represents a challenge to Catholic Schools in our efforts to express the 'way of Jesus' to the world through our education, programs and example. Our hope is only that we represent Him to the best of our ability.
This year we have an interesting aspect to our celebration as we look at the world, its people, and cultures. Every class has chosen a certain area of the world to demonstrate for you and prepared displays and demonstrations of them with great enthusiasm. When you pick up your "Passport" at the Chili Supper on Friday you can travel through the following countries from 6:00 to 7:00 pm. Who knows what you may see or hear!!

K/PK - United States 1/2 - Brazil 3 - Australia 4 - Egypt and Kenya 5/6 - Europe 7/8 - Oceania
Our St. Louis news media will cover the effort of the Archdiocesan Schools donations to the Key Player initiative. St. Joseph's has contributed $325.50 from our 'Change for Change" coin collection so far.

Traditions
Of the many Christmas traditions it's always inspiring to observe how families handle their celebrations. Here's one: Jeanette's family has followed the custom of having each person bring a flower to the crib as a sign of his/her dedication to Jesus, for over 17 years now. When it's gift-giving time, everyone processes into the living room where the tree and Nativity set is located nearby on a coffee table. Then, one of the children is given the Infant to place on the bed of hay. This is followed by each family member bringing his/her flower to the crib, while offering a prayer. Adults follow the children. When all are finished, gift-giving begins. May your Christmas this year be filled with the blessings of Christ, our new born King, Savior, and Lord. He who knows our joys, sorrows, and trials is there for us, especially when He is invited to your heart and home.

Beat Sin!
Part of our Guadalupe celebration Wednesday was with the 'piñata'. A little known fact about this tradition of the Hispanic culture is that the piñata was designed originally as a faith practice. It would have seven protruding spikes, representative of the seven capital sins…pride, envy, sloth,,,etc. on some kind of form and shape. Individuals are then blindfolded and given the opportunity to strike the piñata in an attempt to break it. The analogy is that beating and breaking capital sins in our lives benefits us with immeasurable blessings. The piñatas were filled with candy, so the benefits were obvious to our students. It was lots of fun.

Mistakes, mistakes...
Please accept our sincere apologies for the website error this week. It is upsetting to consider the aggravation and inconvenience it caused for some families. Be assured that students who arrived at 10:00 will not be counted late. Apparently a conversation identifying options for a possible storm day was misinterpreted to mean that a message for a delayed opening was to be placed on the site. In reviewing this unfortunate event, Father Huber has expressed the hope that you do not lose confidence in the site. People have worked very hard to create it and make it work and we need it to be a useful tool for all of us. Thanks for your patience.

Telephone Jyngle
The telephone 'Jyngle' system is developing. We (thanks to Tracy Boehmer) are working to create several lists and ask for your input... (See attached). One list of numbers is for a daytime emergency notice and another for evening/early morning. The automated system will call your number and deliver a message from the school number in the event something needs to be communicated. Again we ask for your patience with this until we get it going. We will send a test message to see if you receive it and then go from there. Some families are familiar with this system used by local sports teams. Our emergency communication system will then have three major resources; television, website, and telephone. As a general standard, for weather related issues, we follow the Ft. Zumwalt School District.

We are two months into the program and have recycled almost exactly the same amount as last year - which means we won't qualify for either award. 'Tis the season of lots of paper - cards, wrapping paper, sale bills, catalogs, etc. - so please remember to recycle everyday, but especially during the holidays!

The Christmas King
See you on Saturday, 2:00 PM, for the great production. It will be a real inspiration for all. Bring everyone. Is there anyone who can make a CD of it? Please let us know. At this point we do not have any examples of musicals performed by our school. We would like to have something on hand for marketing and for posterity, as well as our own personal enjoyment.

Here's to Steven Bender!
In listing names of those who came to assist with painting scenery for the play Steven's name was inadvertently omitted. He along with the others did such a great job, not to mention their generous gift of time in this busy season. Thanks Steven, you are very much appreciated!

Advent Calendar
A fun family activity for Advent is working your way through an Advent Calendar. There are many varieties some which you may be familiar with already. On our Religion Series website (Finding God.org) click on "Children's Advent Calendar". A message appears each day you click with a suggested 'good deed' in preparation for Christmas. The site also offers a calendar for adults. The important thing is - to do something special to prepare for a new or renewed outpouring of Christ in our lives.

Saint Nicholas Day / Key Player
Parent's Club will offer muffins for sale ($.25 each) on St. Nicholas Day after Mass. This money will help build our donation to the Key Player Initiative. Our local project "Change for Change" (in Homelessness) has collected $342.44 so far, with Grades 7/8 contributing $118.84 followed by Grades K/PK with $70.34. When adding the coins in the 3rd Grade and discussing who might win with this round of donations, Greg P. was heard to say: "It doesn't matter if we win, the poor need it!" What a great job by students, families, and teachers! The next date to tally our change is "December 10th".

Local Needy
Several times a month local people come to the Rectory with various material needs. Help is asked for medical expenses, rent, food, etc., Given that there is a limited budget to assist with these issues, we have decided to donate 25% of our Key Player monies to our Parish for this cause. We have also agreed to 'adopt' a needy family for Christmas. The single mother has a 7 year old girl and custody of a 16 year old girl. Her ability to continue in cosmetology school and work has been impaired because of car problems. We have a list of suggested needs, if you would like to add to your 'change' donation for them, please send money with 'Local Needy' on the envelope. The money will be used to purchase some requested needs and gift cards.

Finding God As Thanksgiving approaches we have an opportunity to deepen our sense of gratitude to God and the people around us by reading the attached newsletter. "A potent antidote: Gratitude" How do you move from "Grrrrrrr! To gratitude?" "New flavors for Meal Prayers", are just a few of the many interesting articles in the "Finding God" series. When it comes to 'gratitude', is there anyone who can't use some help?
A Special Thanks Speaking of gratitude….we are all so very grateful to the Room Mothers who provided a wonderful Halloween / All Saints Eve celebration for each class. It was such a fun way to go home for the holiday break. Thanks again! Conferences went very smoothly resulting in many positive comments. Thanks to all for your cooperation in organizing the schedule and meeting appointments.
Picture Retakes Reminder….if students were absent for the first round of pictures…bring money Monday. If you want a retake….bring pictures. Lifetouch will have a photographer here on Friday to take candids. This will be the first of two sessions to provide additional photos for the yearbook. We are pleased with this extra effort on the part of Lifetouch for our yearbook.
Homework This is an awesome word to a Kindergarten student. After the first quarter when requesting "homework" like their older siblings, our encounter went something like this: "Guess what, we're having homework today". "Oh really?" "That's going to be fun, huh!" "Yes, and we have to do it at home, at night"! "Wow!
Zoo Thoughts From a recent Third Grade Field trip….."My favorite part of the trip was"… "The train, because we went through the Red Rock"…Lela "Looking at the giraffe and zebra"…Christine "The children's zoo because I like getting rammed by goats, petting goats, the playground, and my Mom being there"…Emma "The Sun Bear, because it was posing. I also like the Puma and Snow Leopard"….Andrew "The polar bear because it has cute little black eyes and white fur everywhere. I also like the leopard because of the black dots"….Mary "Looking at the elephants because they are cute"…..Lauren

  Cyber
Rosary
Much
eloquence, theological discussions, moving stories, miracles and phenomena of
all kinds associated with this prayer in history has moved people to 'pray the
Rosary'. Even people of other faith backgrounds pray the Rosary. And now, for
your added convenience and inspiration, we have the "online" or "virtual"
Rosary., Amazingly, some cyber-techies have developed systems, sites, and
techniques for praying during a 'work break' or as a way of concentrating, by
using the internet. Here are just a few sites:

www.worldmissionrosary.org

  Electronic
Reports
Thanks
largely to Tracy Orf and the faculty of St. Joseph's we will produce electronic
report cards beginning with this First Quarter. As with anything new of this
nature we're still working out some bugs, etc. with the production process but
the essentials are in place as you will see when you receive the reports today.
The effort is really something to be proud of especially since it's been
accomplished in such a short time. This project has succeeded not only because
of the expertise and patience of our tech people, Tracy Orf and Jim Woerther but
also because of the enthusiastic support of the staff and generous sharing among
them. Mrs. Killian's efforts were particularly commendable in working with both
staff and tech support. Go team!
  Key
Player

The Archdiocesan "Key Player" initiative as described in an earlier Flyer will
begin next week. We plan to have a 'coin jar' in each classroom to collect
"change for change in homelessness". The jars will be emptied every 2 weeks and
a prize awarded to the winning class. Prizes may be, 'extra recess time',
'spirit wear day', etc. as determined by each teacher.
  Halloween
Cliff-Hangers
When the
internet went off during the 1st and 2nd Grade computer class, students were
asked to create a Halloween story from a group of typical words. Here are two:

"One Halloween I was bobbing for apples and it burned bad. I carved a pumpkin
and then I flew out on my broomstick. I discovered a new world with smoke, and
the smoke was black and orange. The land was called "the Dark and Scary World"."
-- Valerie

"On Halloween we go trick-or-treating and get some candy and see some ghosts.
One day I saw a spooky house and took a broomstick and went inside. I saw a
black and orange skeleton and a bat that flew down at me."
-- Scott R.

Saint Talk During a recent discussion with First Graders about Halloween costumes the question was asked: Which Saint are you going to dress up as for Halloween? Here are some responses:

St. Matthew. Why? Because he was a tax collector and then gave away all his money to follow Jesus! -- Ben

"St. John the Baptist". Why? "Because he baptized Jesus." -- Nathan

"Mary our Blessed Mother". Why? "Because she's our Mother." -- Shelby

"St. Therese". Why? "Because she did little deeds, but in a big way." -- Rachel

"An Angel" Why? "because I like angels, they protect you, and they guard you." -- Jenna

"Mary" Why? "because she is the Queen of all saints" -- Lydia

Parents Club Meeting The Wednesday night meeting at 7:00 will feature Denise Pillow, a speaker who will address the topic of 'Internet Safety'. Parents may pick up their Fundraiser items and complete a couple of forms for the school, before or after the meeting. We hope to see you then.
Coalition Earlier this year the 'Archdiocesan Coalition Program' for parents of students in Grades K, 3, and 6, was described. As a support for parents of children this age it has been proven to be most beneficial to those who have attended. The meetings for parents of students in the Sixth Grade are now coming up, so those parents will receive specific information, dates of meetings, and attendance cards, with this week's Flyer. If you missed the Kindergarten presentation, or cannot attend the 6th grade one, you may borrow a DVD from the school office to review at home. We have one copy of each. Please don't hesitate to ask.
Give Kids A Smile Families having difficulty affording regular preventive oral health care for their children ages 5-12 are encouraged to attend the first annual free Tiny Smiles clinic on Saturday, Nov. 3, at St. Louis University Center for Advanced Dental Education (CADE), which is located at 3320 Rutger Street, near Grand and Chouteau. Other screenings will be available too. More details? …check the web site www.gkas.org, or call 636 397-6453, or ask for the information letter from our school office.

Daycare In general our Daycare is working very well. As a word of caution to parents who arrive late for pick-up however, it must be recognized that leaving children unattended on the schoolyard is not a safe practice. In order to provide a safe option therefore, parents will be charged the usual fee of $1. for children who are not pick up by 3:15. Students will be supervised then until someone arrives. Emergencies are understandable and we are grateful to have a program to meet this need. We look for your understanding and cooperation.

Month of the Holy Rosary Every now and then someone expresses the powerful impact of a "family Rosary' experience in such a way that speaks more than just words. Attached is a copy of one person's witness… 'Why We Should Pray Family Rosary', for your reflection.
Thanks Many thanks to the Gorman family for their 'matching fund donation' of $2,400 from the Pfizer Foundation. The money will be used for academic school support. We are most grateful for their generosity and thoughtfulness.
High School Applications for Catholic High Schools will be distributed today to all students of Grade 8. Directions are self-explanatory. Please return them to school when completed.
Blessing Reminder…Friday is the Blessing Ceremony for the School and Child Jesus Statue…right after Mass.

Oh When the Saints...
Cross Country
The Shrine
Finding God A Parent Newsletter from Loyola Press, publisher of our Religion Series is attached this week (provided in hardcopy only - if you didn't receive one - send a note to school). The front page headline of this issue surely has to make you smile…"It's Never too Late to Have a Good Day". There is a plan. Just three steps. Read about it.
Congratulations Top Sellers! The fund raiser is over and the following are the Top Sellers who have earned a pizza party. The party has been scheduled for Friday, October 26th. TOP SCHOOL SELLER: Karen Lewis ($629) TOP CLASS: Grade Three ($1927) Next top five: Ryan Haag Kyle Bampton Ashley Hagen Austin Bazzell Andrew Richardson Thanks to all for your hard work and enthusiasm. A special thanks to Tracy Boehmer for coordinating this effort. We should have cleared about $3300 in profits for the school.
Oh When the Saints... The Saints Celebration is planned for October 30th. Each child should wear a saint, angel or holy person costume. This will reflect the true reason for the celebration and teach everyone something about the heroes of our faith. A stipend of $3 per child has been allocated for classroom parties. Additional treats may be offered if parents wish to bring them. Room Mothers have the responsibility for the party and should plan to meet with the teacher to set it up. Tentatively the schedule is; students change into costumes after lunch and prepare to meet in the cafeteria at 1:15. There will be a Saints Parade and brief activities before returning to rooms at about 1:45 for the classroom activities organized by the Room Mother.
Cross Country St. Dominic's Cross Country Meet for students from Grades 1-8 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23rd on the St. Dominic campus - starting and finishing near the Football/Soccer Game Field. The race will start at 5:00 P.M. and there will be divisions for boys and girls and for different age groups. This year there will be separate races for boys and girls of Grades 1 - 4. There will be a team competition again this year for students of Grades 5-8. There must be 4 runners to compete for the team award.
The ShrineOne can't help but notice how beautiful the shrine of the Divine Child Jesus in front of the school is developing. The Ellison and Wilmes families are doing such a great job with landscaping and design. Also, Joseph Miller added a spotlight. With each addition you just go…ohhh, and wow. You think it's finished, and then it gets even better. Plan on joining us for a blessing ceremony if you can, after Mass on Friday, October 19th.

No School Monday Reminder….faculty workshop at ICD.
Buckle Up! Students of the Early Childhood classes will enjoy a special program encouraging them to "buckle up" on Tuesday. The program should be entertaining as well as informative. Each child will receive a 'buckle-up bear' to take home as a reminder.

Virtue of the Month
Holy Rosary
Saving Works
Coalition Interview
Attachments
Virtue of the Month Our virtue of the month for October is: "Responsibility". This is a good time of the year to explore the ways we can practice this virtue.
Holy Rosary October is traditionally celebrated as the month of the Holy Rosary. Part of our Catholic tradition has also been for families to pray the Rosary together.
We can't help but recall Father Peyton's encouragement: "The family that prays together stays together." Also, Pope John Paul II once said: "How beautiful is the family that recites the Rosary every evening." Even one decade would make a good start. In a thank you note concerning our last First Friday Rosary, Cindy Knaust said. ".. Thank you for teaching the kids how to say the rosary and what to meditate on."
Saving Works Those who take the time to send in plastic bags for recycling give yourself a pat on the back. We received a check for $195.00 for our latest pick-up! Thank you for your effort in saving the earth. Textbook changes each year result in surplus used books. We're pleased to report that the sale of some of these books has brought us a check for $59. This will help defray the cost of new materials.
Coalition Interview Sherry, how did you like the Coalition meeting for parents of Kindergarteners? "I thought it was very well done. It was excellent. Over one hundred people attended." What was the topic discussed? "The presenter explained that she could not go in depth with each point she wanted to make because of time constraints but would stay after and answer questions and concerns. She gave an overview of the physical, social and emotional development of a child and what to expect of your child at this age. One area of discipline addressed was if you are using a punishment or consequence which is making the child rebellious, try depriving him of something he/she is emotionally attached to."
Are you glad you went?
Very glad. I learned some good things.

High School Night Every Fall Catholic and Private High Schools host some type of Information program for potential students. St. Dominic High School is planning their High School Night for interested middle school students on Wednesday, October 10. Watch for specific flyers on this. All Saints Eve Our Halloween parties are scheduled for Tuesday, October 30, at 1:30 P.M. This will be preceded by our parade of Saints in the cafeteria. Attached to each Flyer this month there will be a page of Saint info to help with building our Saint IQ.

Fall Festival
SCRIP Program
School Pictures
Uniforms
Worldwide Children's Holy Hour
Fall Festival In addition to feeding a jillion people this Sunday we look forward to experiencing a wonderful spirit of 'community' in all who have come together to make this happen. Not only do we benefit from mutual support and generous giving for one another but your actions provide a great model for our children. It's a gift that keeps on giving, in an environment of living faith. Reminder ... No school Monday, so we can help with the clean up.
SCRIP Program Thanks to all who have entered into the SCRIP habit. Once you start, purchasing with cards, it turns out to be an easy way to benefit the school. At this point we have sold more now than all of last year! Thanks to Tracy Boehmer who has been tireless in getting SCRIPS from everywhere, meeting all requests in a timely manner, and keeping track of it all. Whew! We received information about Macy's recently. They offer an e-scrip program like Schnucks where after completing a brief application form you receive a card to be used when purchasing.
School Pictures The School Picture envelope with options and costs were sent home last week. Please review these and return the envelope before Friday. Students are expected to dress nicely ...in Church clothes, for the picture. The company would like a parent volunteer to assist. If you can do this please call the office.
UniformsIf you need additional uniforms, please remember we have a considerable stock of good used uniforms at no cost to you. If you don't have time to deal with it, just send in the size and description of what you need. It's an exchange program. When you can bring in an article do so, if you don't have anything at the moment, it's ok?that's all. Check out the attached flyer from our uniform company.
Worldwide Children's Holy HourWe plan to join in this activity with children from over 40 nations, on Friday, October 5th at 10:15. The children will receive an apostolic blessing from Our Holy Father for their participation. More to come next week.

Flyer Distribution We currently have 44 subscribers to the e-version of our school's newsletter. Thank you to all who are helping reduce our paper consumption by choosing this method of delivery.

Email Circulation
Testing
Fall Festival
Fundraiser
Coalition Meetings Email Circulation Our Friday Flyer email program is running smoothly with about 50% of families using this option. The Flyer is available as an article on our web site (www.stjojo.net), via email, or as a take-home paper. If you wish to utilize the email option, just send your email address in or you can subscribe online - look for the subscription page under the "School Home" menu. A story is told about the condition of humanity on Earth (probably 2007!) and how displeased God was with what his people were doing. He then sent an angel to check it out and received a report that about 95% were misbehaving and 5% were good. Having a hard time believing this, God sent another angel with the same mission only to hear the same report again. He then decided to email the 5% crowd to encourage them and give them a little something to keep them going. Curious, one person asked another; "Do you know what that email said? No? I didn't get one either."
Testing This is the week. Grades 1-8 will be taking their annual Standardized Tests next week. Generally people understand that students do better in tests when they have had good rest, and nutrition as a preparation. A study has been examined recently which gave evidence to show that drinking soda limits the ability of students taking test….nutrition makes a difference. Students should come prepared with #2 sharpened pencils. Little or no homework will be assigned this week. Attached is information concerning the tests from our Archdiocesan Office of Education.
Fall Festival We're enthusiastic about the upcoming Fall Festival on the 23rd. Not only is it a special time for community and fun in the Parish but it gives us an opportunity to help with the clean-up on Monday when school is not in session.
Fundraiser Tom Evans Fundraising sponsored a fun Magic Show to kick off our annual Fundraiser. Packets were distributed to each student with all the information and catalogs necessary for the sales. Be aware that a computer program is available for your shopping/selling convenience.
Coalition Meetings The Archdiocesan Department of Education sponsors a series of meetings each year to support parents in their effort with child rearing and behavior. The meetings are directed to parents of Kindergarten, Grade Three, and Grade Six students. This fall parents of our Kindergarten class have been informed about meetings for their age group and each has received an 'attendance card' to bring to the meeting they choose to attend. Classes will be notified about these meetings when they become available.

Progress Reports Progress Reports for all classes will be sent home on Wednesday this week. Consideration of the comments at the top of the report should be made by families.
Pictures School Picture Day is scheduled for Friday, September 28th. Check for info sent home.
Thanks! Two teachers and 11 little people are quite happy these days with their new CD player, thanks to Mrs. Terbrock! Thanks to all who shopped at Target with the 'Take Charge of Education' Program and earned $43.66 for us. We appreciate your effort in supporting us this way.
Lunch Program Attached to this flyer is information concerning the free or reduced lunch program. Please take a look at it and consider taking advantage of it if you think you qualify.
Spirit Wear The brief chill of a beginning season reminds us that sweatshirts may be needed soon. Attached is a copy of our Spirit Wear order form for your convenience. We have some sweatshirts in stock and can order additional ones if necessary.

September Mary Days
Holy Cross
Lifetouch
Positive... Yes!
Scrip Program
Band September Mary Days It's always inspiring to consider the Mary Days of September. Like the leaves of fall each one reveals another part of the gifts of Our Lady.

September 8th, Mary's Birthday,
September 12th, the Holy Name of Mary,
September 15th the Sorrows of Mary, and
September 24th Our Lady of Mercy
There are other less known feast days celebrated during this month, but the total picture these portray is the same. It's just a good way to start anything, like the new school year, by focusing on Mary. An example of simplicity, purity, truth, long-suffering, perseverance, prayer, and compassion, she never tires of pleading for us no matter what we do or don't do…..and that's a good thing."Pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may become worthy of the promises of Christ."
Holy Cross In a small way everyone can participate in the celebration of the Feast of the Holy Cross on Friday. It was so interesting last year when each family sent in a 'crucifix' or 'cross' to place on our table in the cafeteria. To see the different yet similar types of images and crosses made an impression on everyone. There will be an 'Intention Box' where you may send in or write and enter your petition. These will be remembered during our brief prayer service after Mass….followed by….refreshments. Please join us if you can.
Lifetouch Families who purchased a yearbook have received a coupon for free portraits at JC Penny. This is to remind you that the coupon must be used before the end of October. There are still some books for sale….$15 each.
The commission check for our Spring pictures has come in. At 15% we have received $105. Thanks to all who participated.
Positive...Yes! For such a sore subject it was most refreshing to hear a parent say:
"I miss not having the bus but I kind of like two things about the new plan even better. One, I live on a gravel road and had to wait and wait for the bus it seemed. Secondly, I enjoy chatting with people on the parking lot as we wait in our cars." Way to go!Another…."I like the discipline system in the Third Grade…the fact that there is a 'blue' card between 'green' and 'yellow' gives the kids even another chance to re-focus" It's really good! Thanks folks!
Scrip Program After careful review of both the receipts (which have no information for scrips on them) and the website that keeps track of the scrips totals, there is no way for the scrips program to keep track of Schnucks e-purchases/card swipes at this time. The school gets a check every 2-3 months for all people's sales combined but does not break this out by family. I will keep checking this website on occasion to see if they have done any updating, but until further notice the Schnucks purchases will not be tallied. In addition, every 2 months a family statement will go home with your on-going scrips purchases and the amount of purchases/credits you have made. The first one will go out at the end of September. If you have any questions please contact Tracy at 327-3471 or via email - scrips@stjojo.net Band Parents interested in the Band program are invited to attend a beginner band (5th Grade) meeting at St. Dominic High School in O'Fallon anytime between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 18th. The meeting will be held in the Band Room, which is in the lower back end of the building. Parking is available in the front and in the back of St. Dominic's.
The beginning band teachers, Mr. Crane and Mr. Dineen, will be present to answer your questions about joining beginning band. Also, Band Instrument Music Store will have a large selection of band instruments on hand for you to try out and inspect. It is recommended that students rent an instrument the first year rather than buy one.

Grandparents We have so enjoyed having our Grandparents with us today, even as the nation prepares to celebrate them on Sunday. What a gift you are to each generation! It has meant a great deal to us to have you pray and socialize with us at our doughnut social. Thanks.
It's Coming The annual fun Fall Fundraiser is coming. Watch your green folder for details. An assembly is planned for Thursday at 2:00 to introduce students to the program.
Wish List Boom Box (CD player) for the Pre-K program.
Traffic Everyone seems to be doing a great job with the traffic pattern for pick-up and drop-off. Thanks for your patience.
Children's Morning Offering (of the Pre-K class) Dear God, Each thought, each word, each act of mine, Shall be an act, of love divine. And everything that I shall do, will be Dear Lord, For love of you.

Virtue of the Month
Big Thanks
Art Class
Hearing / Vision / Immunization
Yearbooks Virtue of the Month September's virtue as you can see in the assignment book is "perseverance". As we look forward to our Labor Day Holiday in the light of this virtue we may want to reflect on a quote from Helen Keller: "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved."
Big Thanks We were so surprised and grateful for the Boeing 'matching gift' donation from one of our parishioners, Norman Ritter, in the amount of $2,500! It was especially timely, since our textbook expenditures have increased significantly. If you know of any other workplace with 'matching funds' for schools, please send in their names so we can share this information.
Art Class Art classes are being offered at St. Mary's in O'Fallon from 3:30-4:30 p.m. by Sister Mary William Pezold. If interested, please call Sister Mary William at 636-240-3420 for information and registration.
Hearing / Vision / Immunization Thanks to Mary Romine and Renee Dalton who assisted her, the Hearing/ Vision screening is completed. Six students received notices of concern. State immunization requirements are also being checked by Mary Romine who can then complete the state compliance report for St. Joseph School as soon as each student's record is complete. Thank you all for your cooperation with this effort.
YearbooksIf you missed the chance at our Parent Club meeting to purchase a Yearbook, we have several for sale. Students who purchased a book have received a bonus coupon from Lifetouch today for a free photo. We have several books for sale. If you wish to purchase one you may send cash or check payable to St. Joseph School for $15.

Grandparents' Day In anticipation of National Grandparents Day next Sunday we plan to have a donuts and juice get-together after Mass on Friday in the cafeteria. All are welcome. Please pass the word along.
Rosary Buddy For our First Friday Rosary we plan to have each grade sit with their 'buddies next week. The combinations are: Grade 7/8-Gr. 3: Gr. 5/6-Gr.2; Gr. 4-Gr. K/PK. This will be one of the activities 'buddies' will do together this year.
The TalkOnce again, St. John's Mercy is offering an afternoon tea for Mothers and Daughters (10-12 yrs.) and a program for Fathers and Sons: Boys into Men (11-12 yrs.). Please check the attached flyer for details.
Skate with the Saints The Catholic Youth Apostolate and CYC Sports Office have collaborated with the St. Louis Saints amateur hockey team to provide an ice-skating party for young people between the ages of 12 and 16. The Saints are known for combining hard play with evangelization. During the event students meet the players, skate with them at the Brentwood Rink on Saturday evening, Sept. 15th. See attached flyer.
** Early Dismissal **Students will be dismissed at 12:30 after lunch on Friday. Spirit wear is an option for that day.
